Transrectal Ultrasound Biopsies of the Prostate
MultiCare Department of Urology
Dr. Champ Weeks
(253) 301-5100
You are scheduled to have a transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) of the prostate and prostate needle biopsy. You should not take any Aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Aleve, Naprosyn or Ibuprofen for at least 1 week prior to your biopsy appointment. This includes Indomethecin, Colchicine, Vitamin E or fish oil supplements as well. If you take a blood thinner (Coumadin, Warfarin, Plavix, Aggrenox), please inform your doctor. Please take only Tylenol or Acetominophen on a limited basis for pain prior to the biopsy.
In preparation to your procedure, please take:
- Ciprofloxacin (“Cipro”, an antibiotic) 500mg tablet twice a day as directed, starting 36 hours prior to biopsy on an empty stomach. Please take the antibiotic until the full course is completed.
- Fleet enema to wash out your rectum about 2 hours prior to biopsy. This can be purchased from the pharmacy or over the counter at the local drugstore.
- Should you lose your antibiotic pills, please call the office as soon as possible so replacements can be provided.
- PLEASE eat a normal breakfast or lunch prior to the biopsy.
- These steps are taking to minimize the small risk of infection from the biopsy. If these instructions are not followed completely, the biopsy will need to be cancelled and rescheduled.
After the procedure:
Remember to continue Cipro (the antibiotic) as directed until the course is completed.
- The chance of a complication is less than 1%.
- You can expect blood-tinged urine for several days after the procedure or blood-tinged semen for several weeks. You can also expect a small amount of rectal bleeding or just a little blood on the toilet paper for a day or two.
- Rarely, one might develop fever, shaking, chills and/or significant blood in the urine or from the rectum. If any of these things happen, you should immediately call the Urology clinic at (253) 301-5100 to find out if we are available to see you, or go directly to the emergency room at Allenmore Hospital at 1901 S. Union St.
