Post-Vasectomy Instructions

Scrotal support should be worn at all times for the first week after a vasectomy, such as tight briefs or an athletic supporter.

Ice (frozen corn, peas, popcorn kernels) should be applied to the scrotal area for one hour at a time multiple times throughout the first 72 hours or more if needed to minimize risk of bleeding, swelling and discomfort as well as prolong the local anesthetic effects.

No strenuous activity should be performed in the first 72 hours such as lifting anything heavier than a phone book. Doing so may cause bleeding, pain and swelling. Daily activities may be slowly reintroduced at patient's pace of comfort.

No sexual activity for the first week after a vasectomy. You may resume as tolerated after that point. Remember, there may be blood in the ejaculation but will clear on its own.

You may shower after 24 hours but no bathing for 1 week after a vasectomy.

Semen analysis samples should be collected at 10 and 12 weeks following vasectomy in compliance with instructions from the Multicare lab.

Continue whatever form of birth control you have been using as you are not considered sterile until we obtain 2 consecutive semen analyses demonstrating absolutely no sperm.

If there is rapid swelling, significant discoloration or uncontrolled discomfort, please do not hesitate to let us know.
